Robbie Coltrane Death: Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor, best known for his role as Hagrid in the Harry Potter series, passed away at 72, his agent confirmed on Friday, 10/14/23. Coltrane’s agent, Belinda Wright, confirmed to the Daily Beast that the actor died in a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. She added to the BBC that Coltrane had been ill for two years but did not reveal the illness.
In a statement to the Daily Beast, Daniel Radcliffe called his Harry Potter co-star “one of the funniest people I’ve ever met” and recalled how Coltrane “made us laugh all the time as kids on set.”

Born Anthony Robert McMillian in 1950, Coltrane made his debut in the Jimmy McGovern series Cracker, where he played Dr. Edward ‘Fits’ Fitzgerald until 2006. He won several British Academy Television Awards for his role as a crime-solving criminal psychologist.
Coltrane also starred in two James Bond films, but achieved international fame by playing Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant, half-wizard Hogwarts park ranger, in the eight-film Harry Potter series.
Personal Life
Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan on 30 March 1950 in Glasgow, Scotland, to a doctor and teacher. He later changed his surname to Coltrane to honour his love for jazz icon John Coltrane, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art, Coltrane tried his hand at being a painter but soon found his passion for acting.
Coltrane also benefited from his 1993 autobiography, ‘Coltrane in a Cadillac,’ which was adapted into a television series. The book tells the story of his famous journey across the United States in a 1951 Cadillac, a trip that stretched from Los Angeles to New York City.

I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”
