Pee Wee Kirkland later attended Norfolk State University and played on the basketball team, pairing with future NBA star Bob Dandridge. The following year the record was 21-4 and they lost in the first round of the D-II tournament.

It is thought he turned down the offer because he was earning more from his current activities, including being a drug dealer, than he was from professional basketball.
