Pee Wee Kirkland later attended Norfolk State University and played on the basketball team, pairing with future NBA star Bob Dandridge. The following year the record was 21-4 and they lost in the first round of the D-II tournament.

In 1969, the Chicago Bulls selected him with the fourth pick in the 13th round. It is thought he turned down the offer because he was earning more from his current activities, including being a drug dealer, than he was from professional basketball. In the basketball film Above the Rim, Kirkland plays Georgetown recruiter Phil Redd. Kirkland is quoted and appears in the song “Grindin” music video by the rap group Clipse.
