On How He came About the Name ‘Dudu Heritage’
On how he came up with the name ‘Dudu Heritage’, Ibironke said in an interview: ‘I heard so many rumors about these people saying all sorts of things. I wanted to open the first African store in the United States. So, I thought about what name I could use. I chose Oracle. I selected Black Heritage and about three other names. Nevertheless, I came up with something because of the things that it would deal with, African objects, music, things, etc. It wasn’t about Nigerians as a reason to serve. I wanted to serve black and white Americans. Nigerians already knew what we were doing, but I needed an opportunity to engage those who were unaware. My wife suggested that we include our indigenous language before the history of our country, as mentioned above, ‘Dudu Heritage’. When we hear the word doo-doo, it means ‘dirt’ in America. But ours is ‘Dudu Heritage’. So I adopted Dudu Heritage, which is my home for African culture, entertainment and arts. In less than three weeks, three African-Americans came to ask me the meaning of ‘Dudu’. They asked me to explain what “Black” meant and not “doo-doo”. That’s how I learned the idea of Dudu Heritage”.
